Interested in Becoming a Driving Instructor?
There are many great reasons to become a driving instructor, for example:
Helping people to achieve their goals - it's a very rewarding job
Continuous learning and development
Flexible working hours - fit around your commitments
Ability to choose your own ways of working (to some extent!)
Variety of work - no two lessons are the same!
Meeting new people
Not an office-based 9-5 job
However, driving instruction is not for everybody, and there are some drawbacks you need to be aware of when considering starting training as an instructor, including:
Self-employment involves a lot of admin - tracking and responding to enquiries, managing a diary, bookkeeping and completing self-assessment tax returns
Self-employment is risky: if you are off sick or your car is off the road (or there is a pandemic), you lose money
Income and expenditure can be unpredictable (which can make it difficult to take out loans or mortgages) and there are no benefits such as sick pay, pension contributions or bonuses
The job can feel isolated and lonely
